Airfoil Chaffers

This component operates in the following manner:
built in vanes in the bottom of the airfoil chaffer trap air
from the fan and direct this air nearly straight upward in
order to prevent grain blowover. This allows as much as
1/3 more air to be applied to the shoe. Blocking fingers
between the openings spread this air at the surface of the
chaffer, suspending trash and allowing grain to drop out.
The net effect is to allow more fan speed for more air on
the shoe. This allows more lifting of trash on the chaffer,
thus better separation. Also, since more cleaning is done
on the chaffer, the cleaning sieve can now be opened
wider, this helps to eliminate returned grain which is a
major cause of cracking.

The airfoil chaffer will prevent thin crops or shriveled
grain from blowing over, yet cleans heavy crops as well.
This allows more flexible operation of your combine as you
move from one area of the field to another or change fields
or crop types. In usual circumstances, fan speed and
cleaning sieve opening are set one time. Since grain
blowover is prevented, a better average setting is found for
most all field conditions, including ends of rows where the
shoe becomes completely unloaded.

The cereal grains and soybeans, you should expect a
15% to 30% increase in capacity with better recovery,
eliminating 25% to 75% of return. Higher air availability
provides a cleaner seed sample, helping to remove foreign
material such as joint grass, cheat, and other weed seeds.
In lighter crops, such as sunflowers, grass seeds, clover
and alfalfa, since the wind is directed upward instead of
toward the rear of the combine, much better recovery with
a cleaner sample has been observed. In corn, depending
on moisture content, capacity should remain at good
levels with fewer fines and broken cobs in your bin. We
have found that most machines don't require a bottom
sieve in this crop.
